January 15, 2008 Presidential Primary Election
2008 Presidential Primary Election Voter Guide
The Voter Guide includes the website addresses for each candidate included in the guide and their answer to five questions. See candidate websites for more detailed information about their positions.
Because they did not meet both criteria for inclusion, Democratic candidates Gravel and Kucinich and Republican candidates Huckabee and Hunter are not included in the guide.
For the Tuesday, January 15, 2008, election, Michigan voters will have to specify whether they want a Democratic or Republican ballot for the Presidential Primary. Each political party will receive a list of the voters that asked for their ballot. No permanent record will be kept of your choice by the government and it will, therefore, not restrict your party option for future primaries.
4 DEMOCRATS ON THE BALLOT IN MICHIGAN:
- Hillary Clinton
- Chris Dodd
- Mike Gravel
- Dennis Kucinich
- Uncommitted
The other 4 candidates (Joseph Biden, John Edwards, Barack Obama, Bill Richardson) asked for their names to be removed from the ballot. Any write-in votes for them will not be counted. Since the ballot inclusion deadline, Democrats Joseph Biden, Chris Dodd and Bill Richardson have withdrawn from the race. The national Democratic Party had said that Michigan's convention delegates will not be seated because the Primary was moved into January.
A vote for 'uncommitted'
is a vote to send delegates to the Democratic National
Convention who can vote for any candidate they choose
at the Convention. The Michigan Democratic
Party is encouraging supporters of those candidates
not on the ballot to vote "uncommitted"
instead of writing in their candidates' names.
Write in votes for those candidates will not be counted.
9 REPUBLICANS ON THE BALLOT
IN MICHIGAN:
- Sam Brownback
- Rudy Giuliani
- Mike Huckabee
- Duncan Hunter
- John McCain
- Ron Paul
- Mitt Romney
- Tom Tancredo
- Fred Thompson
- Uncommitted
Since the ballot inclusion deadline, Republicans Sam Brownback and Tom Tancredo have withdrawn from the race. The national Republican Party has said that only half of Michigan's convention delegates will be seated because the Primary was moved into January.
If you vote by Absentee Ballot, you will have to choose the party ballot that you want sent to you. You may also be asked whether you want to automatically receive an Absentee Voter (AV) application to request an Absentee Ballot in the future. A court ruling which precluded the city of Detroit from mailing AV applications automatically has put in question the practice of clerks sending AV applications automatically to voters 60 and over without authorization from them.
