Voting in Primary Elections

FAQs: Voting in Primary Elections

CAN ANY REGISTERED VOTER PARTICIPATE IN A MICHIGAN PRIMARY ELECTION?

YES.  Michigan state law provides for open primaries in which any voter may participate in a party’s primary election, regardless of that voter’s preferred party.

CAN I VOTE ON EITHER PARTY’S PRIMARY TICKET?

Yes, but in a Primary election you must select candidates from only one party. The Primary ballot is divided into columns: one for Republican candidates and one for Democratic candidates for the same offices.

The ballot also includes a separate column for nonpartisan offices, such as judges, and for ballot proposals. All voters may vote in the nonpartisan and proposal section, regardless of which party’s ballot they choose.

You may not “cross over” by voting for partisan candidates from more than one party. If you do, your votes for partisan offices will not be counted.
